open-circuit cell

open-circuit cell
open-circuit cell,
an electric cell, as a dry-cell battery, having two poles connected by a flashlight switch or other device to make a closed circuit. Bubbles of hydrogen ions on the positive electrode finally stop the current, making open-circuit cells useful only for short periods.
